The award winning heritage centre is a favourite with local and international visitors and is renowned as a key visitor attraction in Athenry. An ideal activity for families, the centre offers fun and interactive learning opportunities and also provides face painting and interactive exhibits like toy castles!
Athenry has a rich and varied history. Like many settlements in Ireland, the town was formed on a focal river crossing and became an important centre where 3 old Irish kingdoms converged. Due to this history, the name Athenry or Áth na Ríogh whic meant ‘Ford of the Kings’, became known.
Located in St. Mary’s Church, the Athenry Heritage Centre is wheelchair accessible and activities are inclusive to all. The ‘Medieval Experience’ is a unique visitor attraction for Galway and families of all ages will enjoy the medieval costumes, archery and interactive exhibits.

Have a go Archery
Test your skills with the heritage centre’s Have-A-Go archery activity and experience the oldest tradition in the world, which is fully supervised by trained archery instructors.
Visitors can discover this exciting sport with our ‘Medieval Experience’ ticket or try our exclusive archery lessons for individual or group visitors.
This activity is inclusive for all ages and abilities
Schools Tours at Athenry Heritage Centre
A school tour of the Athenry Heritage Centre provides all the elements for an educational and fun day out. Children can learn using the centre models, story-boards and interactive exhibits, while enjoying medieval punishments in the market square “stocks”. The school tour comes alive with medieval costumes for all the students and the centre provides supervised Have-A-Go archery lessons for budding Robin Hoods!
The students can also visit the dungeon of horror to experience the dark side of medieval life. Discover the wooden maze and enjoy a picnic in the centre’s garden. Admission is €9:00 per student for all the activities listed on this page.
