The area is dominated by Croagh Patrick Mountain. Known as the ‘holy mountain’, this site has witnessed religious pilgrimages on the mountain for many thousands of years, dating back to the time of St Patrick – Ireland’s Patron Saint.
It is said that St Patrick completed a forty-day Lenten ritual of fasting and penance here and legend also has it, that Croagh Patrick is the mount from which he banished snakes from Ireland forever! Each year many hundreds of visitors and tourists climb the 764mtrs to reach the summit.
The surrounding area also offers lots of delights for visitors with many green flag and blue flag beaches within short driving distance from the hostel and cottages.
The village of Murrisk has a rich history and detailed information on the history of Croagh Patrick Mountain pilgrimiges is available at the Croagh Patrick Visitor centre. Also close by, visitors can take a stroll through ancient history at the 15th Century Murrisk Abbey.
A solemn and poignant visit is made by many to the National Famine Monument in Murrisk. This beautiful outdoor ‘coffin’ ship sculpture by Irish artist John Behan, was unveiled by Irish President Mary Robinson in 1997 and commemorates the anniversary of the Great Irish Famine between 1845 and 1852.
Experience true West of Ireland hospitality, with superb accommodation facilities and all the stunning scenery that this region has to offer.
“This is, without hesitation, a five star experience owned and operated by a wonderful family. In local terms, I call them and what they offer “brilliant” because when I left, I didn’t want to move on, felt like I was leaving family behind and have already begun to consider how to re-visit. Thanks Coffey family. You’re all very special!”
