days out in Cavan

days out in Cavan have to include a visit to Cavan Burren Interpretive Centre. Group days out are catered for at Ireland’s only hovercraft and mug buggie centre and history buffs will love the Cavan County Museum which has a working replica of a World War 1 trench!

Cavan is located in the Midlands North region of Ireland bordering counties of Northern Ireland. The county is home to the Cavan Burren, an UNESCO Geopark location that is an extensive expanse of limestone plateau, similar to that found in County Clare in the West of Ireland.

Cavan is a place of myth and archaeology, Irish folklore mentions the Shannon Pot as the source of the River Shannon and origin of the ‘Salmon of Knowledge’. Within the landscape, Dolmens and Passage tombs are visible and fossilised remains of crustaceans have been found which hint at the 350 million year old tropical sea that once covered Ireland. In the modern era, lakes are numerous and are a dominant feature of the Cavan landscape, with over 300 throughout the region. No wonder that this lakeland county is said to have a lake for every day of the year!
