The Molgoggers – Cork
June 6, 2018
The Molgoggers are a Sea Shanty and Maritime Song group based in Cobh.
An eight strong, a-cappella buoy band, they formed in 2013 and have performed over one hundred and fifty times since their inception.
Highlights to date include performances at the Opera House Cork, the Cork Choral Festival, the Gloucester Shanty Festival, Skiffie Festival at Strangford Lough, and the Maritime Festival in Ballycastle. There have been played numerous times on radio and television appearances include RTE, BBC, TV3 and IrishTV.
In 2016, they were invited to sing at the most prestigious Sea Shanty Festival in Europe, in Falmouth. Over seventy groups from all over Europe were there together with over forty thousand shanty enthusiasts. They return again in 2018 for the third time and look forward to performing with the best in the business.
The crew have recorded two CDs, Maiden Voyage, in 2014 and Absolutely Marvellous in 2016.
Songs covered include sea shanties and maritime songs, old and contemporary but all sung in a robust and entertaining manner. There are plenty of simple repetitive choruses and audience participation is encouraged, and expected!
Their set includes songs composed by the group and some composed by well-known performers from the Cork Harbour area, such as Jimmy Crowley and John Spillane.
To coinicide with the Cork Harbour Festival, Meitheal Mara, they will perform a one-off concert at the Cork Arts Theatre on Wednesday June 6th. Bí ann gan teip!
