Malahide Castle
Malahide Castle in Dublin reopened to the public in October 2012, following extensive renovations to the visitor centre and grounds. Set on 250 acres of beautiful parkland, the castle is the ancestral home of the Talbot family and is located near the coast in East Dublin
Perhaps the biggest and newest feature is the addition of Visitor centre, accessed through the eye catching walled courtyard. Visitors can also now sample cuisine delights at the wonderful Avoca Cafe, or browse through the Avoca store with its beautiful and unique collections of clothes, jewellery and numerous household items on offer.
The gardens have been landscaped allowing outdoor walks amongst flower beds and hedgerows and a new interactive area of the visitor centre provides an interesting attraction for school groups as well as general visitors. The history of the castle, its previous owners and also interesting facts about Lord Milo Talbot’s Walled Gardens are displayed on exhibition pieces and plaques throughout the exhibition area.
Malahide Castle is open for tours and visitors can enjoy a brand new interactive exhibition. Knowledgeable tour guides give an introduction to the castles former owners – the Talbot family, who lived here from 1185 to 1973 when the last Talbot died. Visitors are taken through many rooms in the Castle, dating back over 800 years. View and hear about the decor of the time, see historical paintings and ponder the social and political history which defined the day to day operation of the castle.
