Hook Lighthouse
Situated on the extreme tip of the Hook Penninsula in Wexford, Hook Lighthouse served as a beacon through centuries of maritime history for traffic entering to Waterford harbour. The light house that exists today was first built over 800 years ago, we’ll say that again….yes 800 years! It is renowned as the oldest intact operational light house in the world!
Views from the top of Hook Lighthouse give stunning scenic views as far as Dunmore East in Waterford and across the southern stretches of the Irish sea and Georges Channel.
These stretches of water are popular with migrating hump back whales and a number of tour services are available in the Duncannon area who will take you out in the hope of seeing these wonderful creatures. Closer to shore, dolphins can sometimes be spotted and also smaller fin whales who migrate through the area during the winter months feeding on local shoals of herring in these rich coastal waters.
Guided tours of Hook Lighthouse will take you up the 153 steps of this 13th Century building and give you a fascinating insight into the construction and operation of this unique monument to human and maritime endeavour. The site also contains a gift shop and cafe and during Summer months severla family fun day events are held in the surrounds at the base of the Lighthouse.
