Fethard Transport Museum
Fethard Transport Museum now attracts some 10,000 visitors each year to its Cashel Road, Tipperary location.
Fethards Folk Museum is now a popular attraction. What started out as a hobby and a centre of parochial curiosity, has now emerged to become one of Tipperarys top tourist attractions.
The centre is the brainchild of Christy and Margaret Mullins and it opened its doors for the first time on St. Patricks Day of 1983. Its impact was immediate and it managed to treble its amount of visitors within the first two years of its inception.
The museum has expanded over recent years to incorporate others aspects and is now know as the The Folk, Farm and Transport Museum. More than twelve hundred exhibits are on display at the museum, all items of historical value.
Tourists to the region come from all over the world – locations like United States, Germany, France and Europe and many visit the museum to view its unique collections – collections like antique bicycles such as the ‘penny farthing’, ‘boneshakers’ and ladies three-wheelers which were discovered in such locations as Carlow, Kilkenny and Mount Melleray.
The museum presents an ideal opportunity for the family to enjoy a day out during the spring and summer. It places a particular emphasis on trying to attract children for educational benefits and school tours visit from as far away as Galway and Kerry.
