Country Life Museum Turlough Mayo

Country Life Museum Turlough Mayo is part of the National Museums of Ireland and explores traditional ways of life in Ireland through trades, crafts, farming, hunting, fishing, domestic life and festivals.

Exhibitions cover traditional ways of life in Ireland dating from the 1850s and offer a fascinating glimpse of rural life where inhabitants used ingenuity and skill to form and mould everyday natural objects into tools and accessories to assist their daily routines.

The museum is housed on the site of Turlough Park, which was the traditional home of the Fitzgerald family, to whom the estate was granted under the Cromwellian land settlements of the mid-seventeenth century. As the original Turlough House was not suitable as a major exhibition space, a new building was purpose-built alongside it.

Exhibitions are spread over 4 floors and cover an Introduction to Rural Life, Crafts and the Environment, Crafts and the Community and rotating Temporary Exhibitions.
