State Lights
September 24, 2016
The Workman’s Club, Dublin
24 September 2016.
Following their epic sold-out show in Whelans in March, the hotly tipped State Lights have announced their biggest headline show to date at The Workman’s Club, Dublin this September.
‘Love Is In Your Eyes’
Singer Shobsy, guitarist Joe Regan drummer Paul Ridgeway and bassist Noel Perry all met at BIMM Music College in Dublin. The atmosphere at BIMM encourages collaborations and musical friendships to blossom. Bonding over a shared interest in classic 80’s music and a common desire to write big stadium sized songs the guys decided to work on a music project. This early incarnation lead to the formation of State Lights in 2014.
Progress was immediate and the band quickly decamped to Granard Co Longford to record their first songs in Joe Regan’s home studio. The first result of these sessions was the ‘Breakout‘ EP which articulates tales of young love, rejection and hope underpinned by a classic vocal style wrapped around a big atmospheric sound. ‘Breakout‘ quickly gained traction at radio with the band being selected as ‘Artist of the week’ on Today FM (Colm O’ Sullivan Show). The band received their first UK radio play in March 2015 when they were selected to appear as ‘Shock of the New’ on the influential Jo Good show on XFM while their first US play arrived shortly after through KROQ 106.7 (Los Angeles).
In March 2016 State Lights released its second ep, ‘The Disguise’, which entered at No 2 on the Irish ITunes Album charts. The following week the band performed to a sold out Whelan’s show. The gig had sold out some six weeks in advance. On TV an invitation accepted for April 9 and a storming performance on the Ray Darcy TV show ensued. The lead track from the EP ‘Love is in your eyes’ has achieved considerable Airplay nationwide and the band is currently the ‘The UTV Irish Artist of the month’ which includes stations such as FM 104, Limerick’s Live 95 and Cork’s 96FM, on the Today FM play list, the Irish section of the RTE 2FM play list together with enjoying support for the last number of months from a wide range of Irish focused shows across the country including Roddie Cleere’s IMS on KCLR 96FM, Rob O’Connor’s Irish Beats on Beat 102 103, John Barker at 98FM and others.
Over the past year State Lights has developed into one of the country’s best new Live bands. The band appeared at both Indiependence & Castlepalooza Festivals, in addition to appearances at the First Fortnight festival for the past two years and a headlining spot at the BT Young Scientist Expo where they performed before 4000 students at Dublin’s RDS Arena earlier this year.
“State Lights – Dublin band whose EP is full of bracing, assured rock/pop tunes and who already have a sound which is aiming for stadiums and arenas. Frontman Shobsy’s voice is one of their key assets, but the musicianship underpinning the songs is also pretty striking at this early stage. The sound of a potentially very large crowd” – Jim Carroll, The Irish Times
“You get the feeling that this is the start of something big“ buzz.ie
“Amazing to say the least. Their music is spine-chilling.. I’m not kidding” Keith & Fiona, Open Mic, FM104
