In fact, not too many hotels can say they have a lineage dating back to the original High King of Connacht, Phelim O’Connor  whose tomb is encased in the old Dominican ruins at the rear of the hotel. As you drive up the winding avenue entrance to the hotel it is often referred to by many visiting tourists as a hidden gem, ” a quaint Irish Manor oozing all the trappings of an intimate castle” added Geraldine Grealy, Director of Marketing & Public Relations at the Abbey Hotel. 

In the early 1960’s, Roscommon native, Mr Thomas Grealy, an entrepreneurial local businessman and the original patriarch of the hotel purchased the 4-acre property located on private grounds and planted the seeds for the thriving business it is today.  His vision was to provide a venue that would cater for weddings and special occasions as well as excellent food and a central stop off for those travelling through the Midlands.  Today, his family continue the legacy taking the business into it’s 4th generation” explains Geraldine Grealy, Marketing & Public Relations Manager at the Abbey.

Alma Saunders, Brighton UK – Our family have stayed at the Abbey Hotel now each time we are visiting relatives in Roscommon. We fly into Knock Airport. It’s a real treat and certainly oozes all the trappings of an old manor property. The staff are always pleasant and accommodating, the food is by far the best of any 4 or 5 star in the country. It’s great to know that it’s family run as this shows in the fantastic service and the consistent customer experience we get each time.  The bedrooms have been recently refurbished and new carpets laid throughout, we just love the pool and sauna. The perfect tonic after a day out and about exploring the hidden heartlands and Galway and the Wild Atlantic way is less than an hours drive. The place is clean and very well kept both the interior and exteriors with plenty of impressive paintings and nods to the history of the property and indeed to the original patriarch. You feel like one of the family and those warm open fires and afternoon tea on a cold Winter day would certainly entice you to never leave.  Another thing we observed was some members of staff who have been there for over 20 years so that’s impressive. It’s a must see and prices are very reasonable compared to some other chain hotels in the area. Keep up the good work Abbey Hotel!
