Arigna Mining Experience is a visitor centre and underground tour in Co. Roscommon celebrating the heritage of coal and Iron Ore mining in Ireland, dating from the 1700s up to the 1990s.
The Arigna Mining Experience will certainly appeal to those looking for a day out with a difference! The visitor centre is located in a beautiful scenic location overlooking Lough Allen. Now a popular tourist spot, this visitor centre preserves the mining heritage of this area and allows visitors an insight into coal mining life as it was in the Arigna Valley for centuries.
Join a former Miner for a tour!
The highlight of the visit is an underground tour with a former miner as your guide. Visitors are brought to the mine’s coal face where lighting and sound effects add to the reality of the experience. The visit to the museum includes access to an exhibit area where there is a DVD presentation and a wonderful authentic photographic exhibition. The centre is fully accessible and is an all-weather facility. It is an ideal day out for the family with a gift shop and coffee shop on site.
This world class tour is close to the borders of Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo. Carrick on Shannon, a popular spot for groups visiting from Ireland and overseas, is just a short distance away and the Arigna tour can provide a unique and interesting day out in the area.
The on site visitor centre is a community inspired tourism initiative which was established in 2003 to preserve the 400 year mining heritage of the area.

School Tours
Arigna Mining Experience is a unique educational experience for children. On arrival, children can explore the exhibition area and then watch a short DVD which introduces the mine. Groups are taken on the 40 minute tour with an experienced former miner as your tour guide, the tour in Arigna Mining Experience is suitable for primary schools, Secondary Schools and Third level students. There are Information/ project packs available for the teacher of the group.
