Duncannon Military Fort

duncannon military fortDuncannon Military Fort is a unique visitor experience located in a coastal setting in New Ross Co Wexford.

The original fortification was built in 1588 to provide a look out and first line coastal defence in expectation of an attack from the Spanish Armada. Surrounded by a 30ft high dry moate, with interior buildings that surround a central parade ground. Walks around the exterior perimeter are popular and offer scenic views across New Ross Estuary and down to Waterford harbour.

The Duncannon Fort Military Re-enactment and Vehicle Show takes place at the fort every June Bank Holiday weekend ans this has grown in popularity year on year, with examples of military vehicles and period dress soldiers on view.

Located at a lower level than the moat is the croppy boy cell. After the 1798 rebellion, prisoners were detained here pending transfer to Geneva Barracks for trial and sentencing.  Visit the Great War Trench Experience to see what life was like in the trenches of WW1 and visit the D. Day Room in a French Chateau.
